Discover WePlayGreen, the environmental football movement founded by professional footballer and environmentalist, Morten Thorsby."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With the terrifying temperatures that Europe had experienced this summer, global warming can\u2019t be hidden as a theory anymore. Something has definitely changed and the huge heat waves during all these three last months, and very soon compared to the normal expectations, are just an added confirmation to the changes that everybody has already seen. With worldwide exposure and interest, football takes an important part in the environmental impact, by the club&rsquo;s activities, the fan&rsquo;s journey and so on\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morten Thorsby understood football&rsquo;s impact very soon, and, from his \u201cIplaygreen\u201d initiative, he founded \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weplaygreen.com\/\" class=\"ek-link\">WePlayGreen<\/a>\u201d, a platform, based on the same name campaign, that promotes sustainability by using the worldwide impact of football. Their mission is to create a movement of  global support for the green shift needed to save the planet and ourselves by using football, and especially football players as its messengers\u201d. Little by little, \u201cWePlayGreen\u201d is making more and more noise in the football\u2019s world, and the platform is getting bigger every day. Interview with Jamie Cornacchia, communications coordinator for WePlayGreen.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Hi Jamie, can you introduce your professional journey, and tell us why you joined WePlayGreen?\u201c<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&rsquo;m Jamie Cornacchia, and my official role at WePlayGreen is communications coordinator. I\u2019m mostly working on our social media but I also do a lot of things behind the scenes. I\u2019m kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/weplaygreen\" class=\"ek-link\">the WePlayGreen press office<\/a>. We are a very small team of 3 people in total. My boss also has a lot of different roles so I especially help with the PR requests and this kind of communication. I\u2019m a voice of WePlayGreen and I do a lot of things like what we are doing right now, such as explaining who we are and what we want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was a student and I graduated in december 2021, in International Relations. I always had in my heart the topic of the environment and the wellbeing of the planet and I feel very lucky to have found this job. The team is great and they are all such genuine people and I work very closely with them because they are like WePlayGreen. I feel really good here and I&rsquo;m learning along away about sustainability and I&rsquo;m meeting very interesting people. This makes my job really fun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we are a young organization and as this topic is really new in the football environment, and as we are the only organization that is \u201cplayer focused\u201d, we\u2019re all learning as we go, and we take the things day by day, but it\u2019s really interesting and it\u2019s really a good and fun journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Are WePlayGreen actions made with the clubs ? Are you behind the club for all their actions about sustainability ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, our mission is to mobilize the global football family in creating support for the global green shift necessary to save the planet, and ourselves. We want to use football to save the world.  We want to start to make this catch on within the Global Football Family, and the \u201cGlobal Football Family\u201d is the name that we gave to the group of worldwide football fans. According to FIFA, the last World Cup was watched by 3.5 billions people. We believe that, with their influence, they can trigger this \u201cgreen reaction\u201d of sustainable attitudes and actions and then reach the rest of the planet. Like i said, we\u2019re at the initial stage and we\u2019re all, me included, taking things day by day, even though sustainability is a serious topic in football today. However, we have some concrete projects as we\u2019re working with some clubs in Scandinavia, some in Holland and hopefully others in others leagues within the next two years, we are always aiming to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Are the players the strongest lever to make things change, before the fans or the club\u2019s administrations?\u201c <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what we want to do is to reach the football players and then they can reach the fans and their clubs. The players are kind of the \u201cmiddle mens\u201d between the big organizations and the grassroots. Players are in the middle because they work closely with the clubs and the organizations, and we really believe that, with the activation of the grassroots, the 3.5 billions fans, the change can really happen because it represents half of the planet&rsquo;s population. We like to refer to the collapse of the Superliga last year, there were massive protests from the fans and the project collapsed by itself in 48 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want to use this example to show how powerful football fans really are and that, without the fans, football couldn\u2019t be football. This movement and this activism are using towards sustainability because the 3.5 billion can really make changes and that\u2019s what we have to do. Football can reach the masses and football players are especially the way that we can reach them. We realize that club and fans are also extremely important aspects of the football eco system, and are working closely with club operations with our \u201cclub society\u201d project, and fan engagement with our #2Community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>You\u2019ve talked previously about Holland and Scandinavia. As Morten Thorsby joined Bundesliga and Union Berlin recently, is Bundesliga on the same journey as these leagues ? Are there big differences between northern and southern leagues in matters of ecological consciousness and actions ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly, I wouldn&rsquo;t say so, because at this time, everybody is still at the initial stages. In Germany, thanks to the federation, the DFL, the 1st and 2nd division have made some sustainability criterias and they will implement this in the next two years. The UEFA has new requirements for the clubs which are registered with them. As an example, within the next few years, all registered clubs will have a sustainability manager that will implement new criterias on this subject. We had the privilege to speak with the UEFA this past summer in June, they presented to us some of their projects. It shows that UEFA is taking things seriously, and it will maybe lead to the same goal of a chain reaction because UEFA has more power to make things change. The Bundesliga is a little bit of the head of everyone. In regards to Northern versus Southern leagues, the difference is made by the actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.234), 17px);\"><a aria-label=\"Read more about (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/faussetouche.com\/test\/institutions-sportives-et-enjeux-climatiques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Read more about<\/a> the inactivity of football organisms.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would say that everyone knows that sustainability and environment is gonna be the future, something that they will have to think about and to do. It\u2019s always a problem of money, football is a money-making machine, so their priorities  are still about avoiding relegation or winning some trophies. I think today, in most club\u2019s minds all over Europe and maybe all over the world are about business practices, but they have to understand that sustainability is a capital topic and that they can save a lot of money by having more sustainable attitudes, and that this kind of attitude can incentivize a lot. To summarize there\u2019s no big difference between European leagues, there\u2019s just some clubs that are taking more responsibilities than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Do you have some means to convince football players to join you or are they already very concerned about environment and sustainability ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a lot of players that are interested in this. Right now, we aren\u2019t in an active phase of recruitment because, like I said, we\u2019re still at the initial phase of our association so we don&rsquo;t have all the resources available to implement our project as quickly as we would like. We do have some players, as you can see on our website and on our social media, that are supporting us and will support us in the future because they are very interested and that\u2019s the kind of highlight we want today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We mostly want players to reach out to us because then we know that these guys are very dedicated and very genuine in their activism. But, we don\u2019t want to just get as many players as we can just to be attractive. We want the players to support us but genuinely by using their platforms to help us because they also want to educate themselves and they want to get better and then they can teach other people how to get better. Actually, we are at a phase right now where people are coming to us and we\u2019re telling them \u201cwe can only help you so far\u201d. We are working right now on having a bigger platform and we\u2019re working with our partners to provide players the means to use their voice and their influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some players aren&rsquo;t very concerned about ecological questions, and I think mainly about players who are frequently displayed in their private jets on their social media and obviously frequently using them for some private journeys\u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Does WePlayGreen think that there is some progress to make in the player\u2019s mentality ? Is this question evolving in the last few years ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little by little, we can see that more and more players are changing their behavior and I think that this was highlighted with the crisis in Ukraine. We saw a lot of players speaking out, and the football world can be political by the voice of its players. I think it opened a door for more players to use their platform to speak out about a lot of important things and things that they think it\u2019s important like politics, racism or the environment. So I think, little by little, the more players speak out the more they encourage others to do the same. Regarding ecological behaviors, I think it\u2019s passing in everyone\u2019s mind a little bit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living in Europe this past summer has been extremely hard, it\u2019s difficult to avoid the fact that the world is warming and I would not know the psychology of the people that take private planes for recreational use but I would say that we\u2019re starting to see some change. Like I said, it\u2019s a global topic. There are some people that are taking things seriously and are seeing the effects of global warming, and some people just don\u2019t understand the stakes. I think that\u2019s the same thing with football players, and we\u2019ll see in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Fausse Touche team recently seen that you were supporting the Reading FC in their actions ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To clarify, WePlayGreen does not have a partnership with Reading FC. What you\u2019re talking about us shedding  light on what they\u2019re doing with the \u201cClimate Stripes\u201d campaign because our platform is highlighting some good initiatives in football that are aiming for a more sustainable football world. So it wasn\u2019t a partnership, it was more like giving them a shoutout, because WePlayGreen thought it was a cool campaign and we also want to highlight the fact that there are also some cool stories in football that are working for a more sustainable world. So our sharing of this kind of action is made to show people that football is taking things seriously and is acting for more sustainability. The stake is highlighting that these actions are taking part of the movement, we want to attract attention to the good stories in football. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when Ben Mee was transferred from Burnley FC to Brendtford FC, I believe that he donated money to a tree-planting offsetting company. We really want to shout out these actions because it\u2019s directly related to our goal and mission to use football to save the planet and it\u2019s also very concrete so we can show this to our community. We want to show to the people that sustainability in football can be the same thing as in other areas, but we want to say that the two things mustn&rsquo;t be separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Have you ever had contact with french players or french clubs about their actions, and have you heard about a French Platform called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stadiumgo.fr\/\" class=\"ek-link\">StadiumGO<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No to both questions. We haven&rsquo;t had any contacts with french players or clubs and I haven\u2019t heard about StadiumGo ! * laught *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s a platform based on the way of working of \u201cBlaBlaCar\u201d, and the platform promotes Carpooling in sport, and especially in football, to allow fans to share their journeys and make it together, which obviously reduces emissions. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is something in France ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yeah, at this time, the platform is growing in France, but the CEO told us a few weeks ago in an interview for our media that the platform will soon develop in other sports and other countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.234), 17px);\"><a href=\"http:\/\/faussetouche.com\/test\/stadiumgo-entretien-avec-romain-lauvergnat\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Read more about StadiumGO (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Read more about StadiumGO<\/a>, a french carpooling applicated dedicated to football fans.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I never heard about that before but this is cool because traveling to the football matches, by car or other means, has the biggest part of football\u2019s footprint. This is cool and this is also something that the clubs are  doing sometimes today. For example, VFL Wolfsburg, in Germany, incentivizes people with season tickets that can also pay for public transport, and it\u2019s something that should be developed. Locally, carpooling and public transports incentives are something great- but i didn\u2019t know that a platform like this was growing up in France and that\u2019s very cool. Since last year and since his recent transfers in Bundesliga and in Union Berlin this summer, Morten Thorsby chose the number two to make the world know that two degrees is the limit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>Does this initiative have a real impact on his teammates, opponents or on all teams, or is it just a personal initiative ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think this has a big impact in the media. He says himself : everytime i go play a match a commentator mentions why I chose the number two, and that\u2019s what I wanted. I wanted people to have this at the back of their mind when they watch a football game. We need to really make a change and I really wanted to bring football into this change.\u201d It made a really big impact on the media. We use this number to symbolize a relevant attitude, because the number two can be used for many things and behavior about sustainability. For example, the number two can be used to remind the fact that you can buy second hand things. So the kind of things he did and he\u2019s doing with the number two is part of our main projects and one of our main ways to reach the people and have a campaign to do it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.234), 17px);\"><a href=\"http:\/\/faussetouche.com\/test\/category\/football-ecologie\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Read more about french challenges linked to football and environment. (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Read more about french challenges linked to football and environment.<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding the impact on the club and his teammates, I know that in Sampdoria (his previous club before Union Berlin), some of his teammates were becoming to be more sustainable, a few of them got interested in electric cars for example, but, in Germany i can\u2019t really say, he joined the club a few weeks ago and I thinks he\u2019s more focusing on adapting to the club and focusing on his playing\u2026 So, I don\u2019t know how much it has made an impact on the club and his teammates, but I think the important thing to highlight here is that it made a really big impact in the media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, two weeks ago, I saw a tweet dedicated to WePlayGreen, about a 14 years old boy who was trying out for the U15\u2019s team of his big local club (Rosenborg notr) and decided to wear number two during his trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think it\u2019s working in the sensitives because it\u2019s something you can remember and it\u2019s a good way to connect football and sustainability, so it\u2019s a good highlight. Of course, some professional players are taking the number two for this reason, like Sophie Junge Petersen, who plays for Juventus,  Emilie Bolviken, who plays for Lyn in Norway, and Christian Borchgrevink, who plays for V\u00e5lerenga in Norway. This kind of diversity in the commitment is exactly what we want.
